How do I know if my therapist is right for me?

A therapist that is right for you uses an individualized approach with their clients. What this means is that they understand that needs will vary from one person to the next. Make sure when choosing your therapist you find that they are able to recognize what your needs are and tailor your therapy to you instead of using a “one size fits all” approach.

It’s okay if you have to call a few therapists to figure out which one will be the right fit. After all, therapy is an investment in yourself. You have to be excited about it and look forward to it so you can achieve what you’re hoping for.

Now. Don’t get me wrong. Finding the right fit doesn’t mean finding the person who will co-sign your every thought. In fact, it may be the exact opposite! Sometimes our thoughts need to be challenged to affect change in our lives.

As for us therapists? Don’t feel bad! We understand the importance of finding the counselor who will meet your needs. We won’t take it personal.

There’s no way that counseling can help my situation, right?

Wrong.

All too often I hear, “Counseling doesn’t work”, “Counseling won’t work for me”, “Counseling is too expensive”, “I don’t want someone in my head”.

We really have to retrain our minds to break away from the stigma that counseling cannot help us. That we are beyond or above counseling.

Putting those negative thoughts aside, do you really want to change your life? That’s what it comes down to. Recognizing the need for change and committing to yourself to make that change. No matter what it takes.

Counseling helps remove those roadblocks that prevent you from achieving your goals. Counseling helps you get yourself out of your own way. Did you know you might be getting in your own way?

Counseling can be one of the foundational components to getting rid of those barriers. Counseling helps you build, or rebuild, the skills needed to get through difficult times in your life.
